What kind of property suits your needs? While there are many different types of property to choose from in Malta, just liking a certain style is not always the best way to choose. So here are a few points to think about that might help you decide what kind of place you should go for.
Space and Numbers
Regardless of which style of housing you prefer, the amount of living space is going to be high on your list of priorities. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need to cater for your family to live comfortably? Is the space you need now the same amount that you’ll need in the foreseeable future? For example, are you planning on starting a family or working from home? Working from home has many distractions and a dedicated home office may be the best solution. Are you planning to entertain a lot at your new home? If so, you may want a reasonable amount of outdoor space.
There is no general layout for different types of houses in Malta and most properties are relatively unique. Consider whether you prefer features such as an open plan kitchen/living/dining design, a square or rectangular plan (rectangular typically have long corridors), an en-suite bathroom or shower room, and whether you want everything on one floor or not.
If you are moving your current furniture with you to your new home, be sure to check measurements and room arrangements to avoid any hassle with things not fitting or looking right. Window and door placements are more important that one might think, even a detail like the direction in which the door opens, so take good note of everything and check that everything will fit nicely.
The Great Outdoors
Outdoor space is not guaranteed with every kind of property, so if it is a priority for you, be sure to look specifically for a place that provides it. Consider how much privacy you would like to have in your outdoor space, whether a balcony, terrace, yard or garden. Keep in mind also that if you have, or plan to get, any pets, you will need to find a place that specifically allows you to do so.
The Type of Property
Generally speaking, apartments are one of the more affordable options, but they are often significantly smaller than a house or maisonette. If money is no object, but you prefer to live in a busier area where houses, maisonettes and villas might be scarce, a penthouse could be the right place for you, as it provides great views, terraces, privacy, and is altogether usually more luxurious. Affordability, preferences and lifestyle are all things that will affect your choice of property. For most of us, the question is "Can I afford the size and type of property I want in the area I prefer?" If not, which of your preferences are the least important, are you prepared to forego them?
